With TunnelHub, VMT introduces a new communication and monitoring platform designed to improve safety and operational efficiency on microtunnelling and Direct Pipe® projects. The system is based on an intelligent network infrastructure and provides comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage throughout the tunnel.
A connected working environment underground
TunnelHub enhances safety and communication through personnel tracking, integrated alarming and shared access to essential real-time information. Users can view live camera streams, monitor the location of personnel and exchange information instantly between the surface and the tunnel.
Access points placed every 50 metres ensure stable Wi-Fi at every stage of the drive. Newly installed components are recognised automatically, allowing the system to go live without complex configuration.
Compact design and efficient setup
At the core of TunnelHub is the Smart System Cable, which combines data and power transmission in a single line. This reduces additional hardware inside the tunnel and keeps installation clean and space-efficient, an important advantage in small-diameter pipes. Optional LED and emergency lighting modules can be attached directly to the cable.
By connecting TunnelHub to 5G or other communication networks, high-quality video calls become a reliable tool for remote support. In the control cabin, personnel positions are displayed automatically as smartphones connect to the nearest access point.
Future-ready infrastructure for microtunnelling
TunnelHub is designed for long-term scalability. Interfaces for gas monitoring systems, alarm functions and lighting allow jobsite teams to expand the system according to project needs.
Built on standard Ethernet and VMT’s MT.connect2 platform, TunnelHub offers a compatible, flexible and future-proof foundation for connected microtunnelling operations.
If you would like to find out more about TunnelHub or discuss possible applications for your project, the VMT team will be pleased to assist.
