Achieving precision in tunnel shutter positioning

TUnIS Positioning Shutter

Traditionally, achieving precise tunnel shutter positioning has been a complex task, requiring surveying personnel to conduct iterative measurements using total stations and prisms. This process demanded significant effort and additional time for office post-processing. However, the TUnIS Positioning Shutter simplifies the process so that setting up total stations or performing repetitive measurement procedures is totally unnecessary. The system automatically calculates and displays all the necessary correction values when the shutter is near the block joint.

Camera technology for maximum precision

TUnIS Positioning Shutter accurately determines the current position of the shutter in relation to the designed block axis in real time. The system uses camera sensor units installed on the frame connected to the shutter cap which ensures optimal real-time control of the machine’s position. It also offers a monitoring function during pouring and curing whereby the position and roll are continuously displayed to the operator, allowing for an exact vertical and horizontal set-up that can be easily and precisely controlled.

Measurable added value

With TUnIS Positioning Shutter pretty much every positioning task is automated. As the base for the automated alignment of the formwork carriage, it makes the positioning process faster, more accurate and safer. Antoine Remy, who worked with our system during the construction of the Greenwich Tunnel and Thames Tideway in London for CVB (Costain, Vinci, Bachy Soletanche), managed to reduce the time for setting the shutter from one hour to eight minutes. His feedback included the following:
“The team is highly satisfied with the system. It enabled us to improve the programme, including the quality of the secondary lining and resources to set the shutters.”

The system also aligns to our sustainability ethos which includes zero paperwork or rework in the office is required. The final shutter position will be stored in the TUnIS database and can be exported and reported in digital format anytime and anywhere.
