SLuM is a system that measures the ring position relative to the tailskin axis with millimeter accuracy and fully automatically.
Reason why
The purpose of SLuM is to continuously and automatically determine the position of the ring in the tailskin in order to detect tolerance errors early to avoid damages of the segments and/or tailskin.

To ensure smooth tunnelling, it is necessary to prevent such damages, as repairs can only be carried out with considerable expenditure of time and money. Advance is not possible during this time – the TBM is at a standstill.
To determine the ideal ring position, SLuM analyses the available space in the tailskin. To do this, the system automatically measures the ring position in relation to the shield tail axis with millimetre precision.
The system optimises the ring building process in interaction with the VMT ring sequencing, taking into account the ring design, the tailskin clearance, the cylinder extension and the machine travel.
SLuM is available in two versions: mechanical or ultrasonic.
