TunnelHub pilot project in Verden: successful site deployment

I.CO.P. implemented a project for TenneT as part of Suedlink in Verden, involving two pipe jacking operations under the River Aller and a tight schedule. This was the first time that TunnelHub our new microtunnelling platform for more efficiency and safety was used.

The Suedlink power line crosses the River Aller near Verden. I.CO.P. S.p.A. is building two parallel pipe-jacking tunnels there for grid operator TenneT. Each tunnel has an internal diameter of 2.0 metres and is around 1.1 kilometres long. Once completed, the tunnels will be fitted with seven empty conduits and filled with liquid soil, through which the cables will then be pulled. Driving of the first tube began in July 2025, with the second starting in mid-October. Despite geological challenges, the tight schedule was adhered to.

Verden provided the ideal setting for VMT to use TunnelHub for the first time in real construction site conditions. I.CO.P. also benefited. In addition to the expanded capabilities compared with the previous JobLight system, improvements were made based on experience and suggestions gained from practical use. In the first tunnel, jobLIGHT was initially carried along as a backup. However, the test results were so positive that TunnelHub was used exclusively in the second tunnel.

Communication as part of the safety concept

In modern safety and rescue concepts, a reliable tunnel communication system is essential, particularly in long sections with limited access. In Verden, TunnelHub has enabled continuous accessibility via comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage, camera integration for visual monitoring, and functions such as personnel tracking and alerting. This improves operational safety and reduces unnecessary trips, even during ongoing operations.

Practical test passed

Overall, the experience on the construction site in Verden was described as very positive; any minor issues were quickly resolved. The modularity and the ability to put together a suitable complete package according to requirements were particularly well received. I.CO.P. has drawn a clear conclusion from the pilot project: TunnelHub is to be used on future construction sites.

Thank you to I.CO.P. S.p.A. and TenneT for their trust and cooperation in the Verden pilot project.
