Since 2024, VMT has been supplying roadheader guidance systems and on-site services for the Ontario Line South, a key section of Toronto’s future rapid transit network. The project runs from Exhibition Place to the Don Yard portal west of the Don River and includes around 6 km of twin tunnels as well as seven new or expanded underground stations with interchange connections to existing TTC lines.
The excavation works are being delivered by Ontario Transit Group, the joint venture responsible for designing and building this major infrastructure project. A total of four VMT roadheader navigation systems have been delivered, three of which are currently in active use, supporting both tunnel drives and underground station excavations.
Precise guidance for complex roadheader excavation
On the Ontario Line South, VMT’s TUnIS Navigation Roadheader systems provide operators with reliable, real-time positioning data for precise excavation. Based on total station measurements, the system continuously tracks the roadheader and visualises the cutterhead position relative to the design tunnel profile directly on the machine.
This real-time visualisation supports accurate face cutting even under difficult visibility conditions, helping crews avoid overcut or undercut. Continuous comparison of the actual profile and the design profile supports optimised machine operation and reduces rework as well as shotcrete consumption. Automated processes also contribute to safer working conditions for personnel underground.
