Planned creativity: Shaping VMT’s innovation culture
Not all ideas necessarily result in products, but products always start ideas. We’re never short of ideas at VMT because innovation is ingrained into everything we do and the end-user is front and centre of our thinking. This overview explores the journey of ideas at our innovation hub, Hive1, from inception to tangible underground solutions.
Cultivating ideas
Albert Einstein once said, “A good idea is one whose realization seems impossible at the outset.”
These words encourage us to bravely pursue the unconventional. At VMT, we cultivate an environment where team members can freely express ideas without fear of judgment. Our innovation hub, Hive1, is a breeding ground for spontaneous creativity where we harness insights from our staff and through guest lectures, innovation scouts and brainstorming sessions; pushing the boundaries of conventional thinking. By staying in tune with technological trends across various industries, we can identify and leverage potential synergies, valuing incremental improvements as highly as radical innovations.
Managing ideas
VMT understands that ideas can arise spontaneously—during coffee breaks, in transit, or on a quiet walk – so, to capture these fleeting moments of inspiration, we’ve implemented an online form that records the essential details and channels them into our innovation pipeline. This process empowers every employee, from every area of the business, to contribute to VMT’s idea pool, whether it is about recruitment, sustainability or cost-efficiency.
Bringing ideas to life
While some ideas impress with their technological prowess or challenge the limits of what’s feasible, the ultimate measure of success is whether the product meets customer needs and is economically viable. Our product development process (PDP) ensures that only the most viable ideas proceed from concept to market. In the planning phase, we prioritize ideas that promise significant advancements for VMT. The development phase involves setting timelines, allocating resources and responsibilities, underpinned by feasibility studies to ensure each project is workable.
As an idea comes to fruition, cross-departmental collaboration within VMT becomes vital and we begin trials with customers to test and refine the product and service ideas. Albert Szent-Györgyi, a Hungarian-American Nobel Prize winner, captures our ethos in a nutshell: “Innovation is about seeing what everybody has seen, but thinking what nobody has thought.” At VMT, innovation is not left to chance; we strategically think ahead to ensure every new product is a forward-thinking solution.
